Press Any Key — Watch It Light Up Instantly

KeyTrace is a free online keyboard tester that responds to every keypress in real time. Check keyboard keys working, run an n-key rollover test, and catch ghosting — all without leaving your browser.

Online Keyboard Tester

Click into the test area below and start pressing keys. Each key you press lights up in real time on the on-screen keyboard, so you can instantly spot dead keys, stuck keys, ghosting, or rollover limits.

Why Use This Free Keyboard Tester

KeyTrace is more than a keyboard key tester — it's a complete diagnostic for every key, combo, and switch on your board.

Real-Time Key Highlighting

Every keypress lights up on screen the moment it registers, giving you instant visual confirmation that each key responds. No lag, no setup — just live, key-by-key feedback as you type.

N-Key Rollover Test

Hold down as many keys as you can and count how many light up. This n-key rollover test reveals whether your board truly registers every simultaneous press — the real difference between a basic membrane and a true NKRO keyboard.

Ghosting Test for Hidden Combinations

Some keyboards silently drop keys when certain combinations are pressed together. Our ghosting test exposes those dead combos, so you know exactly where your board's matrix limits are before they cost you a match.

A Keyboard Tester for Gaming That Keeps Up

Mash full-hand combos, spam rapid inputs, and stress-test mechanical switches. KeyTrace is a keyboard tester for gaming, built to confirm your WASD cluster and modifiers can handle intense play.

Works on Laptop and Desktop Keyboards

From low-profile laptop keys to full-size desktop boards, KeyTrace adapts to your hardware. Diagnose a flaky laptop keyboard or validate a brand-new external board before the return window closes.

Private by Design, 100% Client-Side

All testing happens locally in your browser. Nothing is recorded, stored, or sent to a server — your keystrokes never leave your device, so you can test with total peace of mind.

Ready to Check Your Keyboard?

Scroll back up to the tester and press your first key. It's free, it's private, and it takes only seconds to confirm every key on your board works exactly as it should. No download needed — results appear the moment you type.

Frequently asked questions

Is this online keyboard tester really free?

Yes — completely. There's no sign-up, no trial period, and no limit on how many times you test. Just open the page, click into the tester, and start pressing keys.

Does KeyTrace store or send my keystrokes anywhere?

No. KeyTrace runs entirely client-side in your browser. Keystrokes are read only to light up keys on your screen; they're never logged, stored, or transmitted. You can even disconnect from the internet and keep testing.

Does it work on mobile devices and different keyboard layouts?

The tester is optimized for physical keyboards on desktops and laptops, including ANSI, ISO, and international layouts. On phones and tablets, on-screen touch keyboards don't behave like hardware keys, so for accurate results we recommend connecting a USB or Bluetooth keyboard when you test keyboard keys online.

Why might a key not register during the test?

A key that stays dark usually points to debris under the keycap, a worn membrane or mechanical switch, a loose USB connection, or an outdated driver. Try the keyboard on another port or device — if the key still fails to light up, the switch itself is likely the culprit.
